Algorithms for Management of Undernutrition and Overnutrition in Children and Adults

Four algorithms provide visual guidelines on how to diagnose and treat malnutrition—from severe acute malnutrition to overweight and obesity—in children and adults, enabling service providers to offer clients targeted nutrition services. The algorithms provide a step-by-step approach to managing different nutrition statuses, including diagnostic criteria based on anthropometric measurements, entry and exit criteria for in-patient management, and guidelines for out-patient nutrition counseling and prescription of ready-to-use therapeutic foods/supplements. (Available in French only)

The algorithms are:

  1. Algorithm for the management of overweight and obesity in children 6 to 59 months
  2. Algorithm for the management of overweight and obesity in children over 5 years, adolescents, and adults (including women non-pregnant, non-lactating)
  3. Algorithm for the management of mildly, moderately, and severely underweight children over 5 years, adolescents, and adults (including women non-pregnant, non-lactating)
  4. Algorithm for the management of severe acute malnutrition(SAM) and moderate acute malnutrition (MAM) in children 6 to 59 months
