Months of Adequate Household Food Provisioning (MAHFP)
for Measurement of Household Food Access: Indicator Guide, Version 4 (2010)
Household Dietary Diversity Score (HDDS) for Measurement
of Household Food Access: Indicator Guide, Version 2 (2006)
Household food access is defined as the ability to acquire sufficient quality
and quantity of food to meet all household members’ nutritional requirements for
productive lives. Given the variety of activities implemented by Title II Awardees to improve household food access and
the significant challenges most Awardees face in measuring household food access for reporting purposes, there is a need
to build consensus on appropriate household food access impact indicators. These
two guides describe two proxy measures of household food access and
provide background on the indicators as well as guidance on data collection (including
questionnaire format) and analysis.
FANTA’s Months of Inadequate Household Food Provisioning (MIHFP) for Measurement of Household Food Access:
Indicator Guide (2005) was updated and retitled in June 2007 to the Months of Adequate Household Food Provisioning (MAHFP)
for Measurement of Household Food Access: Indicator Guide to reflect changes in how the indicator is reported by
the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and its Office of Food for Peace (FFP).
The guide has since been further revised; this version is the fourth edition.
A second version of the Household Dietary Diversity Score (HDDS) for Measurement of Household Food Access:
Indicator Guide was produced in 2006 with a corrected example in Appendix 1.
