Guatemala has one of the highest levels of malnutrition in Latin America, the causes of which are multifaceted, with many communities experiencing limited access to food and low dietary diversity, and poor use of food given existing beliefs and practices. FANTA and the Institute of Nutrition of Central America and Panama (INCAP), in collaboration with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, conducted a study to identify recommendations based on locally available foods that can meet, or come as close as possible to meeting, the nutritional requirements of mothers and children in the departments of Huehuetenango and Quiché. FANTA, INCAP, and the University Research Co., LLC Nutri-Salud Community Nutrition and Health Project conducted an additional study to validate the findings in communities in the two departments.

The findings from the two studies were presented in a webinar on June 28, 2016, delivered in Spanish. In attendance were representatives from multiple government ministries, as well as non-governmental organizations and other key stakeholders involved in the prevention of chronic malnutrition in Guatemala.
