Comparing Household Food Consumption Indicators to Inform Acute Food Insecurity Phase Classification

A FANTA and FEWS NET study recommends a series of changes to the household food consumption outcome indicators and thresholds used in the acute Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) household reference table to improve the overall quality of classifications of acute food insecurity severity.

Results from a trial to improve the nutritional quality of diets for young children and pregnant and lactating women in the Western Highlands of Guatemala found that local foods can improve diet quality but are not enough to address all nutrient gaps. FANTA is working with stakeholders to raise awareness of additional strategies needed to meet women and children’s nutrient needs.

National Nutrition Planning Guidelines for Uganda

In Uganda, ministries, local governments, and civil society organizations now have a tool for integrating nutrition into their planning. The guidelines outline principles, processes, stakeholders, and timelines involved in planning, as well as nutrition interventions that sectors and local governments can consider.

Cote d’Ivoire National Nutrition Social and Behavior Change Communication Strategy

FANTA assisted Cote d’Ivoire’s Ministry of Health and AIDS Control, through the Coordinating Director of the National Nutrition Program in collaboration with the National Program for Care and Treatment of PLHIV, in the development of a national nutrition social and behavior change communication (SBCC) strategy. The strategy helps ensure coordination of SBCC in nutrition programming and harmonization of key nutrition messages to be used by implementing partners.

FANTA, LIFT, and ASSIST are collaborating on a three-pronged effort to help integrate nutrition into routine HIV care and treatment and connect clients to livelihood services in DRC. Drawing on the nutrition assessment, counseling, and support (NACS) approach, the work has shown promising results.
