Health care providers need knowledge and skills to help clients improve their nutritional status, manage disease symptoms and drug side effects, and avoid infections. Malnutrition is an underlying factor that can lead to illness and improved nutrition an aid to combatting it. Recognizing the critical role of food and nutrition in care and treatment, medication adherence, and patient retention, governments are increasingly supporting capacity building for health care providers on nutrition assessment, counseling, and support (NACS).
Based on experience in 10 countries in sub-Saharan Africa, FANTA’s NACS training package provides health care providers with knowledge and skills to improve their clients’ nutritional status and quality of life. The materials include a Facilitator’s Guide, Participant Handouts, and a PowerPoint presentation that can be customized for the local context and for integration into a range of health services, including maternal and child health and infectious disease care.
