Counseling Materials for Nutritional Care and Support of People Living with HIV/AIDS (2005)
These communication materials are for use by counselors and service providers to support nutritional care and support
for people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA).* They were developed with a focus
on Uganda. They were produced by the Regional
Centre for Quality of Health Care with technical and financial support from
FANTA and LINKAGES and funding from the United States Agency for International Development
Regional Economic Development Support Office
(USAID/REDSO).
* World Health Organization guidance has changed since publication of these guidelines in 2005. The currently accepted
phrase/acronym is “people living with HIV (PLHIV).”
The materials include: - A flipchart on key nutrition
actions PLWHA should take to maintain health, prevent infections, and manage symptoms
- A job aid for antiretroviral therapy (ART) service providers, counselors, and pharmacists
to help ART clients address food and nutrition implications of ART
- Answers to frequently asked questions about nutrition and HIV/AIDS
- A meal planner to assist PLWHA in planning appropriate dietary intake
- A nutrition assessment tool for using body mass index (BMI) to assess the nutritional
status of PLWHA
- A fact sheet on healthy eating for PLWHA
