Kenyan National Guidelines on Nutrition and HIV/AIDS (2006)
With funding from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)/Kenya, the FANTA project provided technical assistance
to the National AIDS and STI Control Programme in the Kenya Ministry
of Health to develop guidelines in support of the 2005–2010 Kenyan National HIV/AIDS Strategic
Plan, which identified nutrition as a key component
of the national response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. The national guidelines established
a consistent set of nutrition recommendations for people living with HIV/AIDS
(PLWHA)* and describe actions that service providers should take to provide nutritional
care. Topics covered include nutrient needs of PLWHA, critical nutrition actions
for PLWHA, nutritional care for those taking antiretrovirals and other drugs, nutritional
management of symptoms, food security, and nutritional care for children and pregnant
and lactating women living with HIV.
* World Health Organization guidance has changed since publication of these guidelines in 2005. The currently accepted
phrase/acronym is “people living with HIV (PLHIV).”
