Food and Nutrition Implications of Antiretroviral Therapy in Kenya: A Formative
Assessment (2005) Managing
nutritional implications of antiretroviral therapy (ART) is an important component in the success of ART
services in resource limited settings. It is also important to assisting people living with HIV (PLHIV) and caregivers to make
dietary choices that manage drug side effects andpromote drug efficacy and adherence.
A formative assessment was undertaken in Kenya to increase the understanding of the
food and nutrition needs of clients on ART and the messages service providers should give ART clients. The study was
conducted in partnership with a team from the Kenya National AIDS/STI Control Programme at 13 facilities
in 5 sites in Kenya, including public, private, and mission hospitals, as well as
with nongovernmental organizations and networks of PLHIV. Methods included focus group discussions, in-depth key
informant interviews, case studies, and expert informational meetings. The
assessment discusses findings and recommendations related to food and nutrition needs
of ART clients, gaps in program capacity, and client and provider perceptions
about the role of food and nutrition in ART. The findings were shared to assist the government
and private voluntary organizations in creating strategies to strengthen ART services in Kenya.
