Indicators
for Assessing Infant and Young Child Feeding Practices Series (2008–2010)
The lack of international consensus on simple indicators of appropriate feeding practices for children 6–23 months
hampers progress in measuring and improving infant and young child feeding (IYCF) practices and infant and young child
nutritional outcomes. The publications in this series represents the culmination of a World Health Organization
(WHO)-led multi-year effort to develop and reach consensus on a set of simple, valid, and reliable indicators.
They describe and provide guidance for collection of eight core and seven optional IYCF indicators that can be assessed
in population-based surveys, including the Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS); the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS); and
the Knowledge, Practice, and Coverage (KPC) Survey.
The series is provided in three parts.
Indicators for assessing infant and young child feeding practices: Part 1 Definitions (2008).
This document presents indicators to assess IYCF practices at the household level.
It is a follow-up to the WHO document entitled “Indicators for assessing breastfeeding practices” (1991).
