Nutrition
Care and Support of People Living with HIV in Countries in Francophone
Africa: Progress, Experience, and Lessons Learned (2009)
Food and nutrition interventions play an important role in the
global response to the HIV pandemic, though, to date, the main focus
has been on eastern, central, and southern African countries where
the HIV pandemic is most severe. However, food and nutrition interventions
are important in West Africa as well, where HIV prevalence may not
be as high, but malnutrition rates often are.
This report, which was prepared for and presented at the Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso)
World Health Organization (WHO) Consultation on Nutrition and HIV in November 2008,
presents the results of a 2008 review of progress in integrating
nutrition into the HIV care and support in 18 Francophone countries
in western and central Africa.
The report was funded by the United States Agency for International
Development (USAID) Bureau for Global Health’s Office of Health, Infectious
Diseases, and Nutrition and Office of HIV/AIDS.
The report is available in French and an executive summary is available
in English.
