Review of Community-Based
Management of Acute Malnutrition
Implementation in Burkina Faso, Mali, Mauritania, and Niger
FANTA-2 undertook a review of Community-Based Management of Acute Malnutrition (CMAM) program implementation,
including institutionalization and promising practices, in Burkina Faso, Mali, Mauritania, and Niger to assess the degree to
which CMAM had been incorporated into those countries’ government health facilities and protocols. The purpose of the
reviews was to provide the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Bureau for Democracy, Conflict, and
Humanitarian Assistance’s Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA) with a status report for each country;
draw lessons learned; and make recommendations on challenges, promising practices, and gaps to be addressed with OFDA
support during 2010 and 2011. The reviews were intended for OFDA program planning and also potentially as an
advocacy tool to guide other donors in planning CMAM support.
Support for the reviews was provided by OFDA and the USAID Bureau for Global Health’s Office of Health,
Infectious Diseases, and Nutrition.
