agency that implements Americas foreign economic assistance programs. Office
of Health, Infectious Disease and Nutrition (HIDN) of the Bureau for Global Health
The USAID Bureau for Global Health focuses on global leadership,
technical suport to the field and research and evaluation. Office
of Food for Peace of the Bureau for Democracy, Conflict, and Humanitarian Assistance
USAIDs Food for Peace Programs (Public Law 480) supports
both humanitarian and sustainable development assistance in the form of US agricultural
commodities. Title II is managed by the Food for Peace office. The Office
of US Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA) works with US Embassies and USAID
Missions to assess the need for US assistance in responding to foreign disasters.

by the Academy for Educational Development. AED is an independent non-profit organization
committed to solving critical social problems in the US and throughout the world.
AEDs major areas of focus include health, education, enterprise and economic development, environment and energy, and youth development.

research in food security and nutrition and a subcontractor on the project. The
focus of their work with FANTA is on specific policy and technical issues and
operations research.

The
International Food Policy Research Institute works to identify and analyze
policies for sustainably meeting the food needs of the developing world. Research
at IFPRI concentrates on economic growth and poverty alleviation in low-income
countries, improvement of the well-being of poor people, and sound management
of the natural resource base that supports agriculture. IFPRI seeks to make its
research results available to all those in a position to use them and to strengthen
institutions in developing countries that conduct research relevant to its mandate.

Regional
Centre for Quality of Health Care (RCQHC) The Regional Centre for
Qualtiy of Health Care (RCQHC), a non-profit organization based in Uganda, works
to build regional capacity in health care by promoting better practices through
education, networking, and strategic partnerships. RCQHC serves as the base for
the Quality of Health Care Network, a group of over 1,000 health care professionals
from governments, private sector, and NGOs in 20 nations in Eastern and Southern
Africa. With the growth of the HIV/AIDS pandemic in the region and increasing
recognition of the disease's nutritional implications, RCQHC has taken a leading
role in supporting improved knowledge and increased adoption of state-of-the-art
practices in nutrition and HIV/AIDS.

Assistance to NGOS (TANGO) International
TANGO (Technical Assistance to Non-Governmental Organizations)
provides technical assistance in the form of institutional
capacity building to organizations involved in development
and food security. TANGO's key focus areas include health
and education, development relief, urban livelihoods, food
and livelihood security, and HIV/AIDS.

Freedom
From Hunger (FFH) Freedom from Hunger brings innovative and sustainable
self-help solutions to the fight against chronic hunger and poverty. FFHs
Credit with Education strategy focuses on women in rural areas in developing countries
and addresses the root causes of poverty and hunger through a combination of financial
services and education for better health and nutrition.

World Health
Organization is the United Nations specialized agency
for health. WHO's objective, as set out in its Constitution,
is the attainment by all peoples of the highest possible level
of health. Health is defined in WHO's Constitution as a state
of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not
merely the absence of disease or infirmity.

Standing Commission on Nutrition (SCN) is the focal point for harmonizing
the policies and activities on nutrition of the United Nation system. The SCN
publishes the Refugee Nutrition Information System (RNIS) reports quarterly. RNIS
provides information on the nutrition situation of refugee and displaced populations.
The reports focus on Sub-Saharan Africa but also include some information on the
situation in Asia.

Programme is the United Nations frontline agency in
the fight against global hunger. WFP aims to save lives in
refugee crises and other emergencies, improve nutrition and
quality of life of the world's most vulnerable people at critical
times in their lives, and enable development by (a) helping
people build assets that benefit them directly; (b) promoting
the self-reliance of poor people and communities.

International is a United Kingdom-based consulting firm focusing on operational
research in emergency situations. The Community Therapeutic
Care (CTC) program is managed by Valid International with support from FANTA.

NicaSalud
is a federation of 24 international and national PVOs that
work in community-based health in Nicaragua. Beginning in
1998 as a consortium of PVOs working in response to damage
caused by Hurricane Mitch with support from USAID/Managua,
NicaSalud's mission is to enhance the health of vulnerable
groups by improving health indicators, promoting primary healthcare,
establishing a standardized monitoring and evaluation system,
and supporting coordination and collaboration among its members.

The Kenya
Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), in Nairobi, conducts
biomedical research and serves as a centre of excellence for
health research in Africa. It also works closely with the
Kenyan Ministry of Health and various national councils and
committees on issues of research policy and priorities.

Treatment and Research AIDS Center (TRAC) was created
to conduct national HIV/AIDS surveillance and provide technical
assistance to the public and private sectors in the prevention,
testing and clinical treatment of HIV/AIDS in Rwanda. TRAC
is responsible for national planning, policy development,
training of trainers and curriculum development for clinical
programs. TRAC provides technical assistance and guidance
in the effective organization and management of HIV/AIDS programs.
