Very useful sites from Eldis, a gateway to on-line information on development in countries of the South. Coverage includes social, economic, political and environmental issues. Major annual reports of relevant institutions can be accessed as well. The site has a simple search engine, but also features pre-prepared searches on a variety of topics (debt relief, agricultural marketing, etc.) and illustrative stories to put these topics into context.

FAOSTAT is an on-line and multilingual database with records covering international statistics in production, trade, food balance sheets, food aid shipments, fertilizer and pesticides, land use and irrigation, forest products, fishery products, food quality control, population, and agricultural machinery.

MEASURE includes five projects dedicated to providing accurate and timely information on population, health, and nutrition in developing countries. The projects offer technical services in data collection, analysis, dissemination, and use. MEASURE’s five projects, all with links from the site’s home page, are: collecting and analyzing survey data, using data for program monitoring and evaluation, disseminating and using data for policy, supporting censuses and add-on surveys, and providing technical assistance for reproductive health and young adult surveys. Another strong UN website, this time from the Integrated Regional Information Network. IRIN, a unit of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, provides information about sub-Saharan Africa and the Caucasus and Central Asia from a regional perspective, to foster greater awareness and understanding of regional issues and events and to contribute to better-informed and more effective humanitarian action and media coverage, including emergency preparedness and advocacy. The site provides daily and weekly humanitarian news updates, archived by country and date. For those looking for specific information about food or other issues, the site has a home page link to the Relief Web search engine, which finds articles from IRIN and similar news sources and services.

The Nutrition Information in Crisis Situations (formerly RNIS) site features quarterly reports on the nutrition situation of refugee and displaced populations in sub-Saharan Africa and parts of Asia. It is an activity of the United Nations Standing Committee on Nutrition which is the focal point for harmonizing the policies and activities in nutrition of the entire UN system.

Excellent website from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, who is mandated by the United Nations to lead and coordinate international action for the world-wide protection of refugees and the resolution of refugee problems. The World section provides map- and text-based access to country-specific information about refugees and their states of origin. The Statistics and Issues sections are also useful, but specific information about food issues is difficult to find because the site lacks its own search engine. The Official UN Web Site locator at the bottom of the home page, however, has a link to UNIONS, the easy-to-use search system for all on-line UN organizations.

FEWS NET is a USAID-funded activity that collaborates with international, national, and regional partners to provide timely and rigorous early warning and vulnerability information on emerging or evolving food security issues.

A useful website from the frontline food aid organization of the United Nations. The world's largest international food aid organization, the World Food Program buys goods and services from developing countries in an effort to spur their economies, and focuses in particular on efforts to help women, children and the elderly. The site features reports and newsletters on policy themes such as gender issues, and the homepage also has links to detailed information about WFP’s emergency operations and development projects, resources and appeals, country strategy outlines, situation reports and evaluations and studies. The site also has a large database of WFP statistics on projects, resources, global food aid and procurement.

CARE is one of the world's largest international relief and development organizations, with development programs in more than 60 countries. CARE’s Food Security Programs provide food for people after natural disaster and civil conflicts. Food programming also encompasses school feeding, rural food-for-work, urban food-for-work and community kitchens. This CARE subsite’s Info Center has a few on-line publications and special reports and notes from the field from CARE staff working around the world. The Site Search is the subsite’s most useful feature, enabling visitors to search all CARE projects by topic and country.

The Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) is an informal association of fifty-eight public and private sector members that supports a network of 16 international agricultural research centers. The CGIAR contributes to food security and poverty eradication in developing countries through research, partnership, capacity building, and policy support, and is co-sponsored by the World Bank, FAO, UNDP and UNEP. The CGIAR’s website provides information and links to the 16 international agricultural research centers that make up its global network. Links, extensive bibliographic data, and ordering information for CGIAR publications can be accessed either through these 16 subsites or directly through the site’s Publications section. Although many of these publications are available on-line, however, most must be specially ordered.

The Environmental Health Project (EHP) is another project of USAID's Office of Health, Infectious Disease and Nutrition of the Global Health Bureau. EHP’s second objective is to provide a mechanism for access by diverse interests within USAID to a broad range of expertise in environmental health.

The comprehensive Research Themes section gives project information on subthemes organized under four principal sections: Environment and Production Technology, Food Consumption and Nutrition, Markets and Structural Studies, and Trade and Macroeconomics. .

The IIED Research section contains information on the Institute’s ongoing research in Biodiversity, Forestry and Land Use, Human Settlements, Food Security and Participation.

The Environmental Health Project (EHP) is another project of USAID's Office of Health, Infectious Disease and Nutrition of the Global Health Bureau. EHP's first objective is to reduce mortality and morbidity in children under five, by improving environmental conditions or reducing exposure to disease agents associated with infectious diseases of major public health importance. EHP’s second objective is to provide a mechanism for access by diverse interests within USAID to a broad range of expertise in environmental health.

ACCESS works to expand coverage, access and use of key maternal and newborn health services across a continuum of care from the household to the hospital.
