The U.S. government has made HIV prevention, and treatment and care
and support of PLHIV a priority in Zambia. USAID/Zambia's Strategic
Objective 9 is Reduced HIV/AIDS Impact through Multisectoral Response,
and Zambia is one of 15 focus countries under the President's Emergency
Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).
FANTA has been working with USAID/Zambia, USAID/East Africa and the Zambia
National Food and Nutrition Commission (NFNC) to strengthen HIV-related
nutritional care and support services, improve the quality of life
of individuals receiving services and build community capacity to
manage the negative impacts of HIV. FANTA has helped improve knowledge
and practice on nutritional care and support for PLHIV in Zambia
through technical support to the development of national guidelines
and counseling materials.
National Guidelines for Nutritional Care for PLHIV:
FANTA worked with USAID/Zambia, the Ministry of Health, the NFNC,
and local partners to develop and adapt national Guidelines
for Nutritional Care and Support of PLHIV to define the actions
that service providers must take to provide quality nutritional
care and support, to supplement national policies on prevention
and treatment and to strengthen and standardize care and support
for PLHIV across organizations, programs and services.
Nutrition Counseling Materials for PLHIV: Building
on the success of counseling materials developed in Uganda and Rwanda,
FANTA worked with USAID/Zambia, the NFNC and local partners to develop
flip charts
and wall charts for use in community-based and facility-based
care. The materials work to strengthen counseling of PLHIV and ART
clients on the importance of good nutrition, living positively,
preventing and fighting illness through diet and maternal and infant
nutrition. The materials were introduced along with training on
nutrition and HIV counseling and on the use of the flip chart for
facility and community-based care providers.
Food-by-Prescription (FBP) Program for PLHIV: Based on USAID/Zambia's
request for recommendations, FANTA assessed current nutrition and
HIV services and collected and analyzed data on production and distribution
of therapeutic and supplementary foods for PLHIV and orphans and
vulnerable children. FANTA submitted a report on current HIV food
programming opportunities, options for a pilot FBP program and the
roles of partners.
