Nicaragua

FANTA's technical assistance in Nicaragua targeted an increase in the quality, effectiveness and scale-up of the community-based growth promotion program Programa Comunitario de Salud y Nutrición (PROCOSAN). It has done so through technical assistance to the NicaSalud Network, through trainings on implementation of PROCOSAN and through encouraging exchange and dialogue within Nicaragua and in the region.

Building Capacity to Implement PROCOSAN: FANTA has held a series of workshops on Quality Implementation of the Community Health and Nutrition Program for Title II Cooperating Sponsors and staff from the Ministry of Health and NicaSalud. The workshops sought to identify specific areas for improvement in the PROCOSAN system, examine plans already in place to improve the quality of implementation and recommend actions for the future to help ensure quality implementation.

Improving the Counseling Skills of Volunteer Health Workers: Based on a qualitative study of PROCOSAN in 2003, FANTA worked with NicaSalud and other partners to develop a quality checklist to be used as a tool for routine monitoring of the quality of volunteer counseling, for providing coaching and feedback and as an outline for trainers.

Country-Specific MCHN Working Groups: To strengthen dialogue and encourage sharing of effective practices within each country, FANTA helped establish maternal and child health and nutrition working groups in Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.
