Malawi
FANTA worked with USAID/Malawi to provide guidance to existing
and future Title II programs on country-specific food security programming
priorities. In work with USAID’s Office of Foreign Disaster
Assistance (OFDA), FANTA also worked to strengthen management of
moderate and severe acute malnutrition through program reviews and
training in the Community-Based Management of Acute Malnutrition
(CMAM), and through effectiveness trials of ready-to-use therapeutic
food (RUTF) products.
Food Security Programming Strategy for Malawi: USAID/Malawi requested FANTA assistance with the development of a Malawi Food Security Programming Strategy to establish programming priorities for the Improving Livelihoods through Increasing Food Security (I-LIFE) consortium and other potential Title II Cooperating Sponsors (CSs) to achieve Mission food security objectives. FANTA completed the study and conducted a workshop in Lilongwe to present the strategy to current and potential future Title II CSs.
CMAM Program Review: FANTA worked closely with
OFDA in Washington and in the field to conduct reviews of CMAM program
implementation in Sub-Saharan Africa (Ethiopia, Malawi and Niger)
to identify lessons learned and contextual factors that facilitate
and or constrain integration of CMAM in post-emergency and development
settings. FANTA produced country reports with key lessons learned,
then synthesized the findings from the three countries into Review
of Community-based Management of Acute Malnutrition (CMAM) in the
Post-emergency Context: Synthesis of Lessons on Integration of CMAM
into National Health Systems.
CMAM Workshop in Malawi: FANTA held a regional
training workshop to increase the capacity of Ministry of Health
(MOH) health facility staff and health program managers to design,
develop, implement and monitor CMAM programs within existing child
health services. Thirty-one participants from MOH, UNICEF and NGOs
in Botswana, Ghana, Malawi and Uganda attended the two-week workshop
which was sponsored by USAID, UNICEF and facilitated by trainers
from Valid International, Concern Worldwide and UNICEF.
Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) and Other Specialized
Supplementary Food Products: FANTA worked in partnership
with Washington University at St. Louis to carry out a randomized
clinical effectiveness trial of three locally produced food products
for the treatment of children with moderate acute malnutrition (MAM)
in Malawi. The trial compared the recovery rates of children with
MAM given RUTF made with milk/peanut, RUTF made with soy/peanut,
and corn-soy blend (CSB) as a supplement. Outcomes measured included
recovery from malnutrition, rates of improvement in nutritional
status, adverse outcomes, and duration of infections.
