Côte d'Ivoire

[2007-Present]

In Côte d'Ivoire, a focus country of the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), FANTA provides technical assistance to help integrate nutrition into the care and support for people living with HIV (PLHIV). FANTA’s work includes collaborating with Côte d’Ivoire’s Ministry of Health and other partners to develop national guidelines for the nutritional care and support for PLHIV and tuberculosis, create nutrition counseling materials for PLHIV and draft a strategy for designing and implementing nutrition assessment, counseling, and support (NACS) programs.

Nutrition Counseling Materials for People Living with HIV and/or Tuberculosis: FANTA partnered with the Ministry of Health’s National Nutrition Program (PNN) and the Nutrition and HIV Technical Working Group to adapt nutrition counseling materials developed in other countries to the Côte d'Ivoire context. Nutrition assessment, counseling, and support (NACS) Strategy. Formerly called “Food by Prescription” (FBP), NACS has become an effective and replicable approach for meeting the nutritional needs of malnourished people living with HIV in clinical settings, significantly enhancing the care and treatment provided. In 2009, FANTA drafted a strategy for Côte d’Ivoire to guide selection of NACS program sites, program scale-up, selection and procurement of specialized food products, development of eligibility and exit criteria, targeting, and staffing and capacity strengthening.
